About the Section

An intimate, living and immediate cycle of watercolor sheets: a diary of light, air and the moment — from the Tien Shan and the Black Sea to Moldovan courtyards and gardens.

Watercolor matters not as a secondary technique but as a form of high artistic discipline — the ability to fix a moment professionally and with concentration.

Watercolor demands precision of the first touch, transparency of tone, the ability to work with water, light and air.

In this cycle, the artists' ability to fix a moment is especially visible — not superficially, but professionally and with concentration.

Transparency, nuance of tone and the air of the sheet — with no room for correction.

Context

Watercolor forgives no corrections: the tone settles at once, and so demands special concentration of eye and hand. For Grev Kafi this is a form of high discipline, not an easy study genre.

The cycle shows another side of the studio — a quick, living contact with nature, where light and air matter more than subject.

Creation Story

From the Tien Shan mountains to Moldovan courtyards

The geography of the watercolor cycle is broad: Chișinău and its outskirts, Lake Komsomolskoe, Moldovan courtyards and gardens, the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Sozopol, Kamianets-Podilskyi, the Tien Shan.

Among the sheets are "Morning over Kamianets-Podilskyi," "Sozopol," "In the Tien Shan Mountains. A Storm Approaches," "Grev Kafi's Easter Table," "Spring in Our Courtyard," "Tulips Against the Light," "Our Gazebo."

Symbolism

Lyrical landscape

The watercolor cycle is closer to direct impression than to a symbolic program. But Grev Kafi's optics still work here: light and air become bearers of mood and the memory of a place.

Curator's Note

If the large symbolic cycles are speech, the watercolors are breath. They deserve to be viewed as a diary: brief, sincere, on the warm impression of the moment.

Notice the edges of the brushstroke and the whiteness of the sheet. Here air is painted not with color, but with a pause.
